About Curtilage, Negative Spaces Between Heritage Buildings
Curtilage refers to “the enclosed ground and buildings surrounding a dwelling house”, often associated with listed buildings in the UK. In Hong Kong, all revitalization projects contain curtilages, yet the focus on historic buildings often overlooks the value of these in-between spaces. This exhibit explores how communities use these spaces with a focus on the notion of authority and management approaches. We have used “Tai Kwun” and “1881 Heritage” in Hong Kong as case studies and have analysed the heritage associated open spaces with modernology approach as our methodology. The exhibit aims to provide visitors with an immersive experience, encouraging them to reflect on the importance of curtilages and in-between spaces throughout the heritage buildings and beyond.
